This report presents statistics on all persons 14 years old and over who were inmates of certain types of institutions, e.g., prisons or reformatories; local jails or workhouses; mental institutions; homes for the aged, infirm, or needy; and others.
The tables show the age, marital status, highest grade of school completed, and citizenship of the institutional population by type of institution, color, and sex, for the United States, regions, and States, urban and rural. In addition, less detailed data are shown for each urban place and each county.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
